About Dr Tim
BVSc (Hons) BSc (Hons) CertAVP MRCVS Dr. Timothy Hawthorne grew up around racing and equestrian sport from a young age. Raised on a Thoroughbred stud on the Darling Downs, Queensland, he developed a passion for racing, frequently attending the races to watch his parent's horses. At 19, Dr. Hawthorne completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Molecular Biology, then took a year out from academic studies to pursue his love for diving and the ocean. He was employed as a commercial scuba diver, exploring uncharted reefs off the Queensland coast. The lure of a career in veterinary science drew him back to dry land; he wrote and published a thesis on Veterinary Parasitology the following year. From there, he graduated from the University of Queensland with a BVSc (first class honours). Dr. Hawthorne worked for a mixed practice in Toowoomba, QLD before heading to England to pursue a career as an equine vet. He worked in Leicestershire for a year, before taking up a post at the world-renowned veterinary practice, Rossdales, based in the birthplace of thoroughbred racing, Newmarket. During his 5 years there he worked in many high profile racing stables, developing a scientific approach to managing racehorse lameness and wellbeing. He also worked with high profile performance horses including: grand prix dressage, showjumpers, eventers and endurance horses. In 2012, he was awarded the RCVS Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice (CertAVP), which he completed though the University of Liverpool, England. On return to Australia he worked in Melbourne and on the Gold Coast. He then set up TRH Equine Veterinary Services Pty Ltd, based in Guanaba (Gold Coast Hinterland) in 2016. Dr. Hawthorne's particular areas of interest include difficult lameness diagnosis and imaging including radiography plus ultrasonography. He has a special interest in both racehorses (Thoroughbreds / Standardbreds) and dressage horses. He enjoys spending time with his family and his horses on days off.
